What's the Youth Forum been up to?

Well....they visited the Houses of Parliament in September and had a question and answer session with their local MP Jon Cruddas, the minutes of this meeting will be available soon to view.
The Education sub group have been working in partnership with All Saints School planning a schools conference with all eight schools in our borough to come together and participate in workshops, discussions to help improve school councils. This conference will be planned and delivered by the education subgroup in a young people friendly way.
They have also decided to focus their attention on the content of PSHE/Citizenship lessons. They feel these lessons should include information on, for example, how to open a bank account, budgeting, CV writing, how to vote etc. They created a survey asking the schools to get a selected number of the young people from each year to fill it out. With these results they are hoping to meet with the person in charge of lesson planning to see if they can work with them to make these lessons more engaging for young people.
The media Sub Group have decided that one of their projects will be on stereotyping, as it is something many young people in the borough have issues with.
They recently met with Ken Baker from the Police to find out the facts about Stop and Search to hear the statistics around this, as they felt the police are also stereo typed around the percentage of ethic minorities that they stop and search in Barking and Dagenham. They thought this was important to raise awareness about that.
They are in the process of developing their stereotyping project, which will be a media based video clip. The video will be interactive where it will show the audience first impressions of a person. For example the audience will pick out who they ‘who do you think suffers from domestic violence’?
Then the video will show them who the real person is, who will be the least obvious picture, they will film their reactions, and discuss stereo typing with them.
They hope to write a lesson plan, and have it delivered in PSHE lessons in secondary schools in Barking and Dagenham.
Members for UK Youth Parliament Faraz Hanif and Scarlett Ward have been concentrating on promoting themselves as members of the Youth Parliament in Barking and Dagenham, as it is very important to let other young people know who they are. They have created a poster and are now in the process of creating a short video featuring themselves and other members of the forum.
They have also made plans to have their own face book page and in the near future to have an open surgery for young people to speak with them and raise any issues they may feel affect them as a young person.
They have focused their local campaign on stereotyping which fits in with the media sub-group project.
They attended an induction residential in Swindon, where we got to meet other members of Youth Parliament and participate in the activities and workshops provided.
Faraz attended the British Youth Council convention in June where he got to meet lots of other members of youth parliament, youth forum members and young mayors from across London and he attended the annual sitting which was held in July at Leeds University.
On November 15th Faraz will be attending the House of Commons debate. This is where Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) will gather to debate the top five issues from the Make Your Mark campaign and vote on what should be the UKYP campaign for the year ahead.
